Julie Chatterjee is the CEO of Northmill Bank, one of the Nordic region’s fastest-growing challenger banks. Trained as an engineer, she holds a Master’s degree in Systems Engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and has since established herself as a prominent leader in the banking sector.
At the upcoming Global Banking Tech Awards 2025, Julie is one of only four bank executives worldwide to receive double nominations — in the categories Visionary CEO and Woman in Technology.
Her unique blend of financial and technical expertise has made her an international voice on the future of financial services. She was the only Swedish bank CEO invited to speak at the Financial Times Global Banking Summit 2024 on the topic of AI, and will return in late 2025 to speak on “The Future of Banking Leadership.”
In October 2025, her peer-reviewed article on AI in banking was published in the Journal of Digital Banking, presenting a framework for how financial institutions can integrate generative AI to support their strategic objectives.
Julie took over as CEO of Northmill Bank in autumn 2024 and has since led the bank’s integration with Sweden’s new real-time payments infrastructure, RIX-INST, making Northmill the first bank in the country to join the system. She has also driven growth in the bank’s card business, where Northmill’s flagship product was ranked Sweden’s most competitive offering in an independent comparison. Under her leadership, Northmill has revolutionized the process of starting a business in Sweden — reducing the time from weeks or months to just 24 hours. She has also deepened industry collaborations to create more opportunities for female and foreign-born entrepreneurs.
Aligned with Northmill’s mission to improve people’s financial lives, Julie spearheaded the launch of “The Financial Crisis Preparedness Handbook" in September 2025. It is the first comprehensive guide among OECD countries to integrate personal finance into national crisis preparedness. The handbook provides practical tools and advice for households to strengthen their financial resilience — from everyday disruptions to larger societal crises.
Julie’s leadership is defined by decentralization and decisiveness — built on collective intelligence and rapid decision-making. As a mother of two, she believes that financial literacy from an early age is just as vital as transforming the banking industry itself. At Northmill, she has translated this conviction into internal leadership programs and a new development initiative that empowers employees and fosters innovation. The program emphasizes self-leadership and mindfulness, grounded in the latest research in neuroscience and organizational psychology.
Before joining Northmill, Chatterjee held several senior positions at a Frankfurt-listed financial services company and a Swedish retail bank.
